As a late diagnosed neurodivergent (ASD and ADHD) I have lived experience of the difficulties of living with an undefined otherness, and I love that I can now bring this into how I work with you. If you are ready to make some positive changes in your life, I'm here to support that.
About me and my practice
I offer a very human approach, and will be authentic and open with you. I work with curiosity and am interested to find out how the world looks from your perspective, and what you struggle with.
I have always been interested in people, what makes them tick, and looking at our differences. Having been brought up in a very judgemental household, I learned very early in life to accept others for who they are and to embrace all our differences.
I often stand out as being different from others, and learning about my neurodiversity brought me so much understanding and acceptance of myself.
Supporting others to understand and accept themselves is such a wonderful part of my work as a counsellor, and I feel very privileged to be in a position to offer this.
Having my own therapy while training helped me to heal childhood traumas, recognise behaviours that had hurt me time after time, and learn to be the best version of myself that I could be in many situations. This is why I chose the name I did for my practice, as I had experienced for myself that Talk Helps.
Whilst I have not suffered everything that clients bring with them, I have experienced enough to have some view of what might hurt. I will be curious about how things have affected you and will encourage you be to just as curious; asking questions such as "What you have tried previously to feel better?", and I will listen to your truth without judgement, and with no agenda.
Sadly there is no magic wand and no instant fixes. However, magic can happen when you start to look at what you want to change, start to put yourself first, begin to heal what has hurt you in the past and to work out how to not repeat it.
Experience
Before starting my training to become a counsellor, I worked in a variety of mental health roles, which I feel gave me a great foundation to begin this work. It was this work which led me to becoming a counsellor.
Over and over I was being told by my clients that I was the first person to listen to them, rather than just check if they were taking their meds, or eating properly, or many other criteria that was monitored. I found this so sad as many of the people I worked with felt unseen, unimportant, and as though their actual life experiences did not matter. As a counsellor I can pay attention to what is important to you, and anything that you feel you need to speak about matters.
My life experience has been varied, with many ups and downs. That doesn't mean I have experienced everything that you have, but this does help me to be curious about your own life and history, and to be able to support you to identify changes you would like to make, and how you might start to implement them.
Being diagnosed with ASD and ADHD late in life has been mind blowing, in many amazing ways. Finally understanding myself better and seeing many situations which were more difficult than they needed to be really has been life changing. I now understand that different approaches are needed and bring this into my work, according to what you need. There is no one size fits all, and I will work at your speed, with what you bring, and will do my best to support you to find the right way for you.
